CHRIS FELL LRPS

Sports and Event Photographer

About me

I am a keen amateur photographer who is often to be found at social or sports events, particularly around Cambridge.  I take photos on request for charities (http://www.arhc.org.uk/) or local newspapers ( http://www.cambridgeindependent.co.uk/home ).  I am currently President of Cambridge Camera Club which is one of the largest in the UK with about 200 members with a waiting list of up to 2 years. In 2013 I became a licenciate of the Royal Photographic Society; This is the first rung of the ladder of distinctions offered by the society and I had to present a panel of 10 images which had to show a variety of techniques, be free of technical faults and to fit together as a pleasing whole.  My panel is reproduced below.

I tend to prefer photographing people to scenes as may be seen in this panel in which 8 out of ten of the images include people. When it comes to photographing people in action, I am happier shooting a sport which I enjoy watching.  You are unlikely to find me shooting the so-called Beautiful Game, though I have had a go!

I have been the Club Photographer at Cambridge Rugby Club for since 2005 and will usually be found prowling the touch line or the dead ball line during home games and occasionally at away games.  CRUFC photography has introduced me to other rugby opportunities and I have been lucky enough to shoot the England Counties team on behalf of the RFU, but it was through rugby connections that I was introduced to shooting athletics and white water canoe slalom. Newmarket is close to home and dawn on the gallops is always attractive.

Away from sport I have done some corporate photography - capturing the atmosphere of conferences and taking portraits of key staff members for publicity shots. I have also shot some social events - weddings and balls - where my preference is for candid, unposed shots rather than carefully rehearsed shots.

Recently, throughCambridge Camera Club Members, I have started to take an interest in nature photography, though I doubt my patience to sit in a cold hide for hours waiting for a glimpse of a rare bird!

I am interested to develop my skills with software to post process digital photos and spend some time passing on my acquired knowledge to others. I enjoy the process of converting images to a high quality striking monochrome image.

I also have a camera which has been converted to be infra red sensitive which I enjoy using
